How do I get my Indian passport renewed in America?

Posted by in Immigrants | Updated on August 24, 2022

If you are an Indian person living and working on a visa in the United States for a number of years, you may need to have your passport renewed while you are here.

This can be a worrying time because your passport is your key to getting home in the case of an emergency and you do not want to be without one for any period of time.

There is some confusion about the process of renewing a passport, some people even believed they would have to return to India to do so.

In this article, we will tell you everything you need to know about renewing your passport while in the United States.

How to renew your passport

You can apply to have your passport renewed via the postal service. To do this, you will need to send your current passport, along with all of the relevant documentation, to one of the consulates in the United States.

They are found in Houston, New York, Washington D.C., Atlanta, Chicago, and the Consulate General of India in San Francisco.

You are allowed to apply for a new passport within one year of your current passport’s expiration date.

What documents do I need?

As a passport is an official document, there are a number of items you will need to include when having it renewed:

  • Completed application form
  • Current passport
  • Copy of the first five pages and last two pages of passport
  • Three passport sized photographs
  • Notarized copy of US driving license
  • Notarized copy of I-94
  • Notarized copy of H1B work authorization
  • Notarized copy of visa stamp on passport
  • Notarized copy of degree
  • Notarized copy of marriage certificate

How much does it cost?

There are three different fees you must pay to have your passport renewed.

The first is the application fee, this will cost $75 for a regular booklet, thirty-six pages, or $100 for a jumbo booklet, sixty pages.

The second fee is the ICWF, Indian Community Welfare Fund, fee, which is $3.

Finally, you will have to pay a service charge of $19.95.

In total, your passport renewal will cost $97.95 for a regular booklet or $122.95 for a jumbo booklet.

Final Thoughts

In order to make sure there is no unforeseen trouble with your passport renewal, we recommend that you send your application in with plenty of time to spare. Make sure that you have included all of the relevant documents, including notarized copies, and all of the photos required.
